Wild Flower Mix Surprise!

This spring two of our community garden boxes were deemed too damaged to offer up to new members. The wood frames are damaged on both, allowing soil and precious water to escape. One also has invasive shrubs sprouting in it. The other is awkwardly close to a park bench, which unfortunately it tends to attract cigarette buts.

We didn’t have the resources to replace them at the time, so we scattered them with wild flower seeds. Both seed mixes were made of plants native to the Pacific North West (think continental not national). We hoped this would attract pollinators while adding some colour to our little corner of Cambie Square.

One of the boxes was much sandier than we realized. As a result the seed mix didn’t sprout everywhere and is prone to drying out.

The box next to the bench sprouted a surprise. Three very healthy gourd plants. We’re not sure if they were part of the seed mix, came from the compost, or were carried by a critter. It’s late July and they have just begun to bloom so time will tell what they fruit! Some of our younger members are hoping for pumpkins.
